Product development is not simply about changing the appearance. Meaningful design evolution begins with identifying problems in the previous generation and improving the materials, structure, and disassembly process to deliver better flavor, easier cleaning, and a more convenient experience.
From the first-generation all-metal lighter pipe to the fourth-generation The Pisces Pipe, we continued to consider three important questions: What is the best material for the bowl? How can the bowl be removed and cleaned more easily? And how should the lighter and pipe work together?
The evolution of these four generations reflects our continuing effort to create a better portable lighter pipe.
Generation One: Starting with an All-Metal Design
The first-generation lighter pipe featured an all-metal design. Its outer shell, internal components, and bowl were primarily made of metal. The lighter and pipe were combined inside one compact body, establishing the original concept of a pipe with a built-in lighter.
The all-metal construction was durable and gave the product a distinctive mechanical appearance. Users did not need to carry a lighter and pipe separately because both functions were integrated into one compact smoking pipe.
However, practical use revealed several limitations of the metal bowl. Metal heats up quickly and can affect the flavor during use. Because the bowl was not transparent, users could not see its internal condition or easily determine when residue had accumulated and cleaning was necessary.
The bowl was also connected to the main body, making thorough cleaning more difficult. These issues showed us that the second generation needed more than a new appearance. The bowl material and removal method also needed to change.
Generation Two: Upgrading to a Removable Glass Bowl
The second-generation lighter pipe introduced a redesigned exterior and replaced the original metal bowl with a removable glass bowl. This became the most important improvement of the second generation.
Unlike metal, glass does not create the same metallic contact sensation, helping provide a cleaner flavor. Its transparency also allows users to see inside the bowl and check its condition and residue more easily.
The removable bowl also brought part of the experience associated with a glass smoking pipe into the lighter-pipe structure while preserving the convenience of an integrated lighter.
The second-generation glass bowl was designed as an independent component that could be inserted and removed from the back of the product. When cleaning was required, users could remove and wash the glass bowl separately instead of placing the entire lighter pipe in a cleaning solution.
This made cleaning more focused and protected the lighter and other components that should not be submerged in liquid.
However, the second-generation rear cover was still secured by two screws. To install or remove the glass bowl, users first had to remove both screws with a tool and then open the rear cover.
The screws held the bowl and internal components securely, but they also added extra steps. Users needed a screwdriver and had to keep track of the small screws during cleaning.
The second generation solved the problems associated with the metal bowl and made separate cleaning possible, but the removal process still had room for improvement.
Generation Three: A Magnetic Rear Cover for Easier Bowl Removal
The third-generation model retained almost the same exterior design as the second generation and continued to use a removable glass bowl. Its main improvements focused on the rear-cover mechanism and the material surrounding the bowl.
Removing the bowl from the second-generation model required taking out two screws. In the third generation, the rear cover was secured with magnets instead.
Users no longer needed a screwdriver. With a simple pull by hand, the entire rear cover could be removed, allowing the glass bowl to be taken out from the back of the product.
After cleaning, the glass bowl could be returned to its original position and the magnetic cover snapped back into place. This change brought the third-generation model closer to an easy-to-clean pipe, while eliminating the inconvenience of handling small screws.
Another important third-generation upgrade was the silver component with the logo that directly contacted the glass bowl. In the second generation, this component was made of plastic. In the third generation, it was replaced with metal.
In the second-generation structure, the plastic component was positioned very close to the glass bowl. As the bowl became hot during use, long-term heat exposure created a risk of the plastic softening, deforming, or even melting.
For this reason, the third generation upgraded this section to metal. The metal component offered better heat resistance and created more stable support around the removable glass bowl.
The third generation did not dramatically change the product’s appearance. Instead, it focused on solving practical issues found in the second generation while preserving the flavor and cleaning advantages of the removable glass bowl.
Generation Four: The Pisces Pipe Redesigns the Entire System
The fourth generation is The Pisces Pipe, also known as The Pisces Pipe.
Unlike the previous three generations, the fourth generation no longer follows the traditional all-in-one metal-body design. Instead, it completely rethinks the relationship between the pipe and the lighter.
The product consists of a fish-shaped silicone smoking pipe and an independent metal lighter. The two components connect through a sliding track, but they can also be separated and used independently.
The lighter is not built into the silicone fish. It is a separate component. When the silicone pipe slides onto the lighter, the two parts come together to form the distinctive Pisces-inspired design.
This makes The Pisces Pipe a unique smoking device rather than another conventional pipe with a built-in lighter.
After being removed from the lighter, the silicone fish can function as an independent portable smoking pipe. Its flexible silicone body helps protect the glass component inside, while its compact size makes it easy to carry in a pocket or small bag.
The fourth generation continues to use a removable glass bowl but changes the installation method again. The glass bowl is inserted through the open track at the bottom of the silicone fish and then secured with a bottom cover.
For cleaning, users simply open the bottom cover and remove the glass bowl. There are no screws to remove and no large metal rear cover to open, further improving the easy-to-clean pipe design.
The Pisces Pipe also features a glass mouthpiece, so the user’s mouth contacts glass rather than silicone. The silicone forms the fish-shaped protective body and connects the pipe to the lighter, while the glass component functions as both the bowl and mouthpiece.
The independent metal lighter is refillable and allows the flame size to be adjusted. This combination gives the product the convenience of a refillable lighter pipe, while still allowing the silicone pipe and lighter to be separated when required.
Each Generation Solved a Problem Found in the Previous One
Looking back at the four generations, we can see a clear development path for the portable lighter pipe.
The first generation established the basic idea of combining a lighter and pipe inside an all-metal structure. However, the metal bowl affected flavor and was difficult to inspect and clean.
The second generation replaced the metal bowl with a removable glass bowl. This improved flavor and allowed the bowl to be cleaned separately, although removing it still required two screws.
The third generation replaced the screw-secured rear cover with a magnetic one, allowing it to be opened by hand. The plastic component near the heated glass bowl was also upgraded to metal, reducing the risk of heat-related softening or deformation.
The fourth-generation Pisces Pipe reimagines the entire product. The silicone smoking pipe can be used independently or connected to the lighter through a sliding track. The glass bowl loads from the bottom for easier removal and cleaning, while the glass mouthpiece prevents direct mouth contact with silicone.
From an all-metal bowl to a removable glass bowl, from screws to a magnetic rear cover, and finally to a separable Pisces design, every change was made in response to a real issue discovered through product use.
The Pisces Pipe is not simply a modification of the previous three generations. It is a complete redesign built on the experience gained from them. Although all four generations use different materials and structures, they share the same goal: to create a portable lighter pipe that is easier to carry, easier to clean, and more enjoyable to use.
