Why I invented Twisty Glass Blunt

The Story Behind the Original Twisty Glass Blunt

People often ask me where the idea for the Twisty Glass Blunt came from.

The answer is surprisingly simple: a tube of ChapStick.

I wasn’t trying to reinvent smoking accessories. I was fascinated by one simple mechanical question:

Could I build a pipe that advanced the herb forward simply by twisting it?

That single question eventually became the Twisty Glass Blunt.

Inspiration from a ChapStick

One day I took apart a ChapStick tube.

Inside was an elegant mechanism: a platform riding on a center screw that moved up and down as you twisted the base.

I thought…

“Why couldn’t this work for cannabis?”

My first prototype copied the ChapStick almost exactly.

It failed.

The platform rotated while it moved, which isn’t what you want when holding ground herb. Even worse, every twist compressed the herb tighter and tighter toward the tip.

The more you smoked…

…the harder it became to draw air.

Back to the drawing board.

The Breakthrough

After weeks of frustration, I realized something.

I didn’t actually need the moving platform.

I only needed the spiral threads.

Instead of placing an auger screw in the middle, I expanded the spiral outward until it became the entire metal core.

That single insight simplified everything.

Now when the mouthpiece rotates:

  • the spiral gently advances the herb
  • ash can be pushed out easily
  • the herb burns progressively
  • there are very few moving parts

That basic auger design is still the heart of the Twisty Glass Blunt today.

Why the Auger Design Works So Well

One unexpected benefit was cooling.

The spiral doesn’t simply move the herb.

It also creates a longer smoke path.

Instead of traveling straight through the pipe, smoke follows the spiral channels around the auger.

The extra distance allows the metal to absorb heat before the smoke reaches your mouth.

The result is one of the features customers mention most often:

Cooler, smoother smoke.

Why Glass Was the Perfect Material

Once the mechanism worked, another decision became obvious.

Glass.

Borosilicate glass isn’t just clean and heat resistant.

It’s transparent.

You can actually watch the smoke travel through the pipe.

You can see the herb.

You can understand exactly how the mechanism works.

People immediately “get it.”

That visual transparency created countless “Aha!” moments the first time someone picked one up.

A Rolling Paper Alternative

The Twisty Glass Joint wasn’t designed to replace every pipe.
Twisty™ Glass Blunt Slim - 7pipe Home

It was designed to replace rolling papers when you’re out of them, when you’re feeling lazy to roll, or when your friends are all here and rolling a fatty would take too long.

Many people love joints but don’t enjoy:

  • rolling them
  • carrying papers
  • Smoking glue
  • constantly buying rolling papers

The Twisty Glass Blunt provides a reusable alternative.

Simply load it.

Twist.

Light.

Smoke.

Advance the herb as needed.

For many customers it eventually became their daily driver.

Going Viral in 2016

In 2016, the Twisty Glass Blunt exploded across the internet.

The launch happened through a partnership between three companies.

7Pipe

We created the product.

Daily Dot

At the time, Daily Dot had 2 million followers on Facebook and introduced the product to a massive audience.

StackCommerce

StackCommerce connected product makers like us with online publishers.

Their business model was brilliant.

Media companies had audiences but nothing to sell.

Inventors had products but limited reach.

StackCommerce brought us together.

When readers ordered through one of the participating media websites:

  • the publisher earned a commission
  • StackCommerce earned a commission
  • 7Pipe fulfilled the order

Everyone won.

Without spending money on advertising, the Twisty Glass Blunt appeared across dozens of media outlets.

It became:

  • the biggest product launch in 7Pipe history
  • one of Daily Dot’s biggest product launches
  • one of StackCommerce’s most successful campaigns

It remains one of the most memorable moments of my career.

The Counterfeit Explosion

Success brought another challenge.

Almost overnight, copycats appeared everywhere. Off the top of my head, there was a washed up UFC fighter, a publicly listed company out of Florida, even Chongs Choice.

Factories throughout China began manufacturing imitation versions.

Every platform had them, from Ebay, Groupon, Walmart.com, Alibaba, Etsy, and Amazon.

Brands added their own logos.

Some copied our packaging.

Others sold generic versions with little concern for quality.

For a period, our manufacturing partners even told us there was a shortage of brass rods in the exact diameter required for production because so many factories were making copies.

Why Material Quality Matters

One thing separated the originals from the copies.

Material quality.

At 7Pipe, we chose lead-free brass for obvious reasons.

Many counterfeit manufacturers used ordinary leaded brass because it was:

  • cheaper
  • softer
  • faster to machine

But this is a product that is heated repeatedly and inhaled into the lungs.

Material quality matters.

Using properly specified materials isn’t just about manufacturing costs.

It’s about consumer safety.

Unfortunately, many counterfeit products focused only on lowering prices rather than maintaining quality.

The Original Still Evolves

Even years later, the Twisty Glass Blunt continues to evolve.

We’ve improved machining tolerances.

Refined airflow.

Redesigned components.

Developed new mouthpieces.

Explored new materials.

But the core idea has never changed.

A simple mechanical invention inspired by taking apart a ChapStick.

Sometimes the best inventions don’t come from adding complexity.

They come from removing it.

About the Inventor

I’m Jeffrey Han, founder of 7Pipe and inventor of the original Twisty Glass Blunt Pipe.

For me, product design has always been about finding elegant mechanical solutions to everyday problems.

The Twisty Glass Blunt and Twisty Glass Joint began with curiosity, grew through countless prototypes, and ultimately became one of the most recognized reusable smoking inventions in the world.
