We agree with Apple's design mantra: think of cool products, and let the engineers figure out how to make them. When we dreamt up a lighter pipe with glass inside, we were not sure it was possible. In fact, some thought it was impossible. A year and a half of R&D later, we finally had a working prototype. Time moves fast, and we are already on our second generation of the 7Pipe, called the 7Pipe Pro. Please read on to see how we improved an already revolutionary product.

The 7Pipe Pro glass bowl. How did we do it?

As with most man-made objects, making them a lot bigger, or a lot smaller, is a lot HARDER. Think about nano-engineering, where products are made only a few nanometers in length. Or making the tallest building in the world in Dubai. These all represent tremendous engineering accomplishments.

In the same vein, getting a handmade glass bowl to fit inside a lighter pipe is extremely difficult. There are more than thirty size specifications for the glass bowl, many that cannot be off by more than 0.3 millimeters. Also keep in mind that, aside from a few moulds, these glass pieces are largely handmade. Multiply that by tens of thousands of units, and you have a huge quality control probem on your hands.

Everything from the diameter of the bowl push to the tangential angle between the bowl and stem must be controlled for. Being off by more than a few tenths of a millimeter means that the glass will not fit into the 7Pipe.

The product you hold in your hands is the result of lots of trial and error, many factory visits, countless prototypes, and endless tinkering.
